COLT 264 - Heian Japanese Literature

COLT 264 was taught by Prof. Jason Webb in spring 2023 under the name "Asian Aesthetic and Literary Traditions". This course talks a bit about Japanese Literature during the Heian period, using 今昔物語集 as main reference and including readings like 竹取物語 and 方丈記 as supplement. The course was conducted in English.

It was certainly a fun class for the EALC major and a good GE (B+H) as well. We learned so much about the city of Heian-Kyo and its religious and traditional influences on Heian-period Japanese people. There were no formal prerequisites. Course load was light but enough so that the reading materials and their significance were recognized. We got to watch two films: 羅生門 (1951) and かぐや姫の物語 (2013).
